Bottom line (preview): The Mandela Effect as a named phenomenon predates the Higgs announcement and predates high-energy LHC collisions. Fiona Broome’s original framing was parallel-reality / “Sliders” speculation, not CERN. The CERN-as-cause story is a later overlay, crystallizing on YouTube/Reddit ~2015–2017, after the 2012 Higgs announcement and after the Berenstain/Berenstein meme went viral. No credentialed particle physicist has claimed the LHC altered, split, or merged timelines. Adjacent real physics (extra-dimension searches, Higgs vacuum metastability, many-worlds) has been systematically misread.

What this means mechanically: the machine that conspiracy lore treats as a “reality engine” was not colliding at physics energies when Broome named the Mandela Effect. First beam (Sept 2008) is not first collision. First collisions (Nov 2009) were commissioning-energy. Physics-energy running starts March 2010. The Higgs is July 2012.
1.2 Hard Mandela Effect dates (Established)
- Dragon Con 2009 (Labor Day weekend, Atlanta): Fiona Broome, a paranormal researcher/ghost-hunter, is in the VIP/security lounge. A security staffer nicknamed “Shadowe” mentions that other people also “remembered” Nelson Mandela dying in prison. Broome says this is the first time she knew anyone else shared the memory. She goes back to her hotel room and starts what becomes MandelaEffect.com. Her own account: https://mandelaeffectsite.wordpress.com/
- August 2010: Broome registers and formally launches MandelaEffect.com. First article she cites as the origin post: “Nelson Mandela died in prison,” 9 September 2010: https://mandelaeffectsite.wordpress.com/2010/09/09/nelson-mandela-died-in-prison/
- Broome’s original frame, quoted from that site: “This website explores the possibilities of parallel realities, quantum science, real-life ‘Sliders’ experiences, and alternate history.” CERN is not in the founding story.
- Nelson Mandela actually dies 5 December 2013 — four years after the term is coined, and after the Higgs announcement. The namesake “false memory” is of a 1980s funeral, i.e. an event remembered as happening decades before the LHC existed.
- Independent encyclopedic confirmations that Broome coined the term in 2009: Britannica https://www.britannica.com/science/Mandela-effect ; CNN 18 Sept 2023 https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/18/world/mandela-effect-collective-false-memory-scn/index.html ; National Geographic https://www.nationalgeographic.com/culture/article/what-is-mandela-effect-ai
Broome later writes that “around 2012, when the topic went viral, and then mainstream… Everything seemed to change.” That 2012 viral wave is pop-culture Mandela Effects (Berenstain, “Luke I am your father”), not CERN.
1.3 What actually came first (Established + Inference)
Chronological order, compressed:
- 1980s–2000s: People independently misremember Mandela’s death, brand logos, movie lines. No LHC. No named phenomenon.
- 10 Sept 2008: LHC first beam. Nine days later, magnet quench / helium dump. Global “LHC will make a black hole” panic is already running (Walter Wagner, Otto Rössler; see §5). This is doomsday-collider lore, not Mandela Effect lore.
- Dragon Con 2009 / Aug 2010: Broome names the Mandela Effect. LHC has barely restarted. Broome’s cause-space is parallel worlds / Sliders / quantum, not CERN.
- 23 Nov 2009 / 30 Mar 2010: First collisions, then first 7 TeV collisions.
- 23 Aug 2012: Reese, “The Berenstain Bears: We Are Living in Our Own Parallel Universe,” The Wood Between Worlds — the post that turns a spelling dispute into a parallel-universe meme. https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/the-mandela-effect ; Vice recap: https://www.vice.com/en/article/the-berensteain-bears-conspiracy-theory-that-has-convinced-the-internet-there-are-parallel-universes/
- 4 July 2012: Higgs announcement. After this, “God particle” language floods the internet and is later welded onto the Mandela Effect.
- 2013–2015: YouTube/Reddit Mandela Effect boom (MoneyBags73 says he was “hit with the Mandela Effect like a ton of bricks” in March 2016 — Vice).
- ~2015–2017: CERN is retrofitted as the cause. Earliest dated, still-findable explicit CERN→Mandela Effect artifacts cluster here, not in 2008–2010. Examples:
- People’s Voice / YouTube, 14 June 2016: “mandela effect proof they know cern caused the mandela effect” https://www.thepeoplesvoice.org/TPV3/Videos.php/2016/06/14/mandela-effect-proof-they-know — “I think it started back in 2014 but major things are happening every time they ramp up the volts.”
- Cryton Chronicles series, 19 Sept 2016, “CON[CERN]ING THE MANDELA EFFECT: PART SEVEN” (CERN is Part Eight in the series map) https://crytonchronicles.com/ijak/2016/9/19/concerning-the-mandela-effect-part-seven
- CNBC, 22 Feb 2017: first major-outlet treatment of the CERN-as-cause theory as already existing: “Some think more of these incidents have occurred since CERN was established, and suggest that its particle physics experiments are causing the world to shift into parallel universes.” https://www.cnbc.com/2017/02/22/alternate-realities-and-trump-mandala-effect-and-what-cern-does.html
Null result (valuable): I did not find a 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, or 2012 primary source in which Broome, or any other named originator, blamed the LHC for the Mandela Effect. Searches for "Mandela Effect" CERN with a pre-2016 cutoff return later recaps, not contemporaneous origin posts. The earliest dated, still-live explicit CERN-as-cause artifacts I could pin are 2016 YouTube/blog posts (People’s Voice 14 June 2016; Cryton Chronicles Sept 2016), with the theory already treated as existing folklore by CNBC on 22 Feb 2017. Inference: CERN was welded onto an already-named, already-viral false-memory phenomenon roughly 5–8 years after Broome’s coining, and 3–4 years after the Higgs announcement.
1.4 Why the chronology undermines the claim (Inference, resting on Established dates)
Three independent chronological problems:
- The namesake memory is of the 1980s. If CERN “created” the Mandela Effect, it must also have rewritten memories of events 20–30 years before the machine existed, or merged a timeline whose contents include a 1980s Mandela funeral. That is a much stronger claim than “the 2012 Higgs shot shifted us,” and it is the claim the community actually needs. Proponents sometimes bite this bullet (universe-merge preserves whole histories). That move makes the 2008/2012 dates unnecessary as causal anchors, which then makes the CERN correlation ornamental.
- The term is coined in 2009, before Higgs, before 7 TeV collisions. “The Mandela Effect started after 2012” is false as a statement about the name and the founding community. What started after 2012 is internet virality plus the Berenstain meme, plus later CERN overlay. Broome’s own site says the topic went viral around 2012; she does not say CERN did it.
- Even a sympathetic insider rejects LHC-as-sole-cause. Cynthia Sue Larson (IMEC board; the most “researchy” ME proponent) told Motherboard: “the earliest Mandela Effects were happening long before CERN’s LHC fired up, so clearly the LHC is not the only factor to consider with the Mandela Effect.” Vice, 2022: https://www.vice.com/en/article/is-cern-causing-mandela-effect-by-creating-portals-to-alternate-dimensions-an-investigation/
What the chronology does not rule out, if one is being strict: a claim of the form “LHC collisions after 2010 increased the rate of residual timeline bleed.” That is the strongest remaining version. It is also the version for which no one has published a dated, counted time-series of first-report Mandela Effects against LHC luminosity. Reddit users have asked for exactly that scatterplot and not received it (r/MandelaEffect, 2022: https://www.reddit.com/r/MandelaEffect/comments/vlxbox/cern_collider_being_turned_on_at_full_power_on/).
