For each category I ask: what is the phenomenon, what does the best explanation say, and are there any residuals that explanation doesn't cover?

1. The Mandela Effect
1.1 What It Is
The "Mandela Effect" refers to cases where a large number of unrelated people share the same specific, confident, but incorrect memory. The term was coined in 2009 by Fiona Broome, a self-described paranormal researcher, after she found that other attendees at Dragon Con shared her false memory of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s (Mandela was released in 1990 and died in 2013). - "Mirror, mirror on the wall" (actual line: "Magic mirror on the wall")
1.2 The Best Scientific Explanation
The Visual Mandela Effect study (Prasad & Bainbridge, 2022) — the first rigorous empirical measurement — was published in Psychological Science (Vol. 33, No. 12, pp. 1971–1988). Key findings across four experiments (N = 100, 60, 60, 50):
- False memories are specific and consistent. People don't produce random errors; they produce the same wrong answer with high confidence. The same people who add a monocle to the Monopoly Man also add a tail to Curious George and a cornucopia to Fruit of the Loom.
- Inattention doesn't explain it. Eye-tracking showed no consistent attentional difference between correctly and incorrectly remembered icons.
- Online exposure doesn't explain it. Scraping the top 100 Google Images results for each icon found no clear link between how often an altered version circulates online and whether people misremember it.

What makes it hard:

- Snopes investigated and found the logo has never contained a cornucopia; the trademark design search code 05.09.14 ("Baskets...") that some cite as evidence was a classification code, not a description of the logo content [Established]
- No physical artifact (shirt, tag, product packaging) has been verified as showing a cornucopia in the actual logo
The best counter-explanation: The word "loom" in the brand name and the Thanksgiving-associated iconography of fruit-plus-cornucopia create a powerful associative gestalt. The cornucopia is the culturally expected container for a cluster of autumn fruit; the brain fills it in. Artists, illustrators, and journalists — working from the same associative gestalt, not from direct visual inspection — made the same error independently. That so many professionals made it is remarkable, but each was operating from the same cognitive shortcut. 2. Déjà Vu and Déjà Rêvé

2.2 Déjà Rêvé
Déjà rêvé ("already dreamed") refers to the sensation that a current experience was previously dreamt. - r/Retconned (~110K subscribers): A community that presupposes "for whatever reason, it is really happening" — explicitly excluding confabulation, false memory, or "it's always been that way" explanations. This is the community most committed to the reality-shift interpretation.
3.2 Recurring Categories of Reports
After surveying the communities, reports fall into several categories:
Object displacement/appearance: Keys, phones, or other objects disappearing and reappearing in obvious places. By far the most common category. 3.3 Reports That Resist Easy Explanation
I surveyed extensively. The honest answer is: I found no reports that survive even moderate skeptical scrutiny. Every "best of" thread on r/Glitch_in_the_Matrix, when examined closely, falls into one of these categories:
- Unverifiable anecdote (the vast majority): "I saw X, no one else was there, and I can't prove it." By definition, these cannot be investigated.
- Conflation of subjective experience with objective fact. "I felt time skip" ≠ "time actually skipped."
- Selection bias. The community aggregates hits and ignores the millions of non-hits. Given the subreddit's ~1M+ members, even one-in-a-million events should occur regularly.
- Confabulation and retrospective narrative smoothing. Memory is reconstructed, not recorded. Telling a story makes it more coherent than the experience was.
Assessment: The glitch communities are culturally significant but evidentially empty. They are an interesting social phenomenon (people seeking pattern and meaning) but not a source of data about reality malfunctioning. The signal-to-noise ratio is effectively zero for the purposes of establishing that anything anomalous is happening.
4. Time Slips, Reality Shifts, and Missing Time
4.1 Time Slips
Definition: Reports of briefly experiencing a different time period — walking down a street and finding it transformed to an earlier era, with period-appropriate buildings, vehicles, and people.
Famous cases:
Moberly-Jourdain Incident (Versailles, 1901): Two English academics, Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain, visited the Petit Trianon at Versailles and reported seeing people in 18th-century dress, a small bridge and paths that didn't exist on contemporary maps, and a sketching woman they identified as Marie Antoinette. 4.2 Missing Time
The Betty and Barney Hill case (1961): The archetype of missing time. The Hills reported arriving home two hours later than expected after a drive, with torn clothing and no memory of the interval. The fact that some reports come from "credible" witnesses (police officers, academics) does not make them evidence of anomalous phenomena. 5. False Memory Research
5.1 Elizabeth Loftus and the Lost in the Mall Technique

He argued that a person experiences approximately one million "events" per month (defined as notable perceptions), so everyone should expect roughly one miracle per month. In other words: improbable things happen constantly, because the number of opportunities is astronomical. This is not speculation; it is mathematical fact. The relevant comparison is not "how unlikely is this specific event?" but "how many events are happening all the time?"

The statistical argument does not disprove that some reports are genuine anomalies. It establishes that the number of reports we see is exactly what we'd expect from chance alone, making it impossible to distinguish signal from noise without independent verification — which no glitch report has.
7. The r/Retconned Community and "Residue"
7.1 What Residue Is
In the Mandela Effect / Retconned community, "residue" refers to artifacts from the "old" timeline — pre-existing cultural objects (books, logos, newspaper articles, etc.) that seem to confirm the "changed" version of reality. The Fruit of the Loom cornucopia references (§1.3) are the canonical example.
7.2 The Logic Problem
Residue has a fatal logical problem: if reality has changed, why did some artifacts change and not others? The community's answer ("the change was partial" or "some things were left behind as glitches") is ad hoc — it can explain any observation, which means it explains nothing. - The reference was made by someone making the same cognitive error. This is a presuppositional community — it begins with its conclusion and excludes disconfirming evidence by rule. This makes it epistemologically closed. 9. Honest Assessment: Do Any Glitch Reports Survive Skeptical Scrutiny?
Short answer: No.
Longer answer:
The landscape of glitch reports, when surveyed honestly and exhaustively, resolves into three categories:
Explained by known cognitive science (the vast majority). The Mandela Effect, déjà vu, most "NPC encounters," and object displacement are all well-understood phenomena. The Prasad & Bainbridge study in particular demolished the "parallel universes" explanation for the Mandela Effect by showing that the errors are predictable — they follow the same pattern-completion rules every time. If parallel universes were the explanation, the errors should be random (why would a universe-shift consistently add a monocle?).
Unverifiable anecdote. Time slips, missing time, and personal "glitch" stories are reported after the fact, by single witnesses or same-social-circle witnesses, with no physical evidence and no possibility of independent verification. The Law of Truly Large Numbers guarantees that the number of such reports we see is exactly what chance alone would produce.
Interesting but not anomalous. The Fruit of the Loom cornucopia is the closest any case comes to being genuinely puzzling. The volume of independent professional misattribution (novelists, illustrators, journalists) is striking. But the cognitive explanation is plausible, the errors are predictable, and no physical artifact contradicts the official record. This case sits at the edge of "interesting" but does not cross into "anomalous."
The hardest truth: Not a single glitch report has ever been independently verified. Not one. No physical object has appeared from a "different timeline." No verified photograph has shown a person or building that provably didn't exist. No Mandela Effect "residue" has been confirmed as a genuine artifact of a changed past. Every case, at the point of verification, resolves into either a cognitive error or an absence of evidence.
This does not mean the simulation hypothesis is false. It means that the glitch reports we have are not evidence for it. They are evidence of how human cognition works — which is fascinating, important, and well-studied, but is not evidence of reality malfunctioning.
10. Open Threads and What I Didn't Get To
- Quantum mechanics interpretations and their relationship to "glitch" claims — the many-worlds interpretation is sometimes cited by ME enthusiasts, but I did not survey the physics literature for this thread
- The specific neuroscience of déjà vu in temporal lobe epilepsy — I noted the connection but did not do a deep dive on Bancaud's tripartite model or the electrophysiology
- The relationship between dissociative disorders and anomaly reports — a rich area I only touched on
